Forest Works! is a strategy for keeping the woods of western York County, Maine forever available for their ecological, economic and recreational values. We work with willing landowners and towns to connect existing conservation areas with town forests, high-value wildlife areas and privately owned timberlands.

Wooden Skidder Bridge Mat Construction and Installation

The Maine Forest Service in cooperation with Maine’s Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s education committee will be holding a wooden skidder bridge mat construction workshop. Bridge mats, when used properly; allow temporary stream crossings to be installed with minimal impact to the waterbody being crossed. This workshop will be hands-on with participants learning how to construct a set of hemlock skidder bridge mats using a few simple tools. If possible we will also visit a field site to discuss installation of bridge mats. Lunch will be provided. To register, contact Ken Canfield 441-3721 or ken.canfield@maine.gov

Pruning Trees for Timber

The ideal timber tree is tall, straight, has a wide diameter, is free of defects, and is a species that is desired in the marketplace. This outdoor workshop, led by Ken Canfield and Merle Ring of the Maine Forest Service, will re-visit the Yankee Woodlot at the Wells Reserve following last fall's harvest to discuss the practice, tools, and timing of pruning to make the best use of available trees and labor. A discussion of lumber grades and markets will be included.
